The reason every Santorini guide tells you to arrive an hour early for sunset is that the actual sunset moment lasts about 4 minutes. The light that draws crowds, the gold-to-rose color shift on the caldera walls, runs for roughly 30 minutes before the sun touches the horizon, and another 15 to 20 minutes after it drops.

Sun setting over Santorini caldera with whitewashed buildings, capturing the golden hour glow

Quick Answer: Santorini sunset times range from about 17:00 in December to 20:40 in late June. Peak summer (June to July) gives you the latest sunsets at 20:25 to 20:40. October drops to 18:40. December bottoms out near 17:00. Arrive 45 to 60 minutes before sunset at any caldera spot in summer. The golden hour starts about 60 minutes before the listed time.

When the magic actually happens

"Sunset time" is the moment the upper edge of the sun touches the horizon. That is only one frame in a longer show. What you want to time is the full golden hour and the after-glow.

PhaseTime relative to sunsetWhat you'll see
Late golden hour60-30 min beforeWalls turn warm gold, soft shadows
Pre-sunset30-10 min beforeSky deepens, sun looks oversized
Sunset proper0-4 minThe sun touches horizon and drops
Afterglow5-25 min afterPinks, magentas, deep blue
Blue hour20-45 min afterSky goes electric blue, lights come on

If you only have one chance, the afterglow window is often more photogenic than the sunset moment itself. Many honeymooners walk away after the sun drops and miss the best 15 minutes. Stay.

When to leave for the best spots (peak summer)

In June and July when sunset hits around 20:30 to 20:40, here is when to start walking from a central Fira hotel or your accommodation in town.

DestinationLeave Fira byWhy
Oia Castle17:45Crowds. Plan for shoulder-to-shoulder by 19:00
Imerovigli / Skaros Rock19:0020-min walk on the caldera path
Pyrgos Kastelli18:3020-min drive or bus, then a hill climb
Akrotiri Lighthouse19:0030-min drive, parking is tight
Profitis Ilias Monastery18:4525-min drive to highest point on the island
Vlychada Beach19:0030-min drive, west-facing cliffs glow
Ammoudi Bay (below Oia)19:15Walk down 200+ steps from Oia
Rooftop in Fira20:00A 5-minute walk from anywhere in town

For our hotel guests, the rooftop terrace at Aroma Suites is a 30-second walk from any suite. You can have dinner planned, watch sunset from the deck, and still make a 21:00 reservation.

Shoulder season (May, September, October)

These months give you the best mix of warm weather and manageable crowds. Sunset timing in October is roughly 90 minutes earlier than in June, which means an earlier dinner and an earlier evening.

  • May: 20:09 to 20:31. Still warm. Crowds growing but bearable.
  • September: 19:47 down to 19:01. Sea is at its warmest. Light is softer than peak summer.
  • October: 19:00 down to 18:14, then DST ends and the clock falls back. The post-DST end-of-October sunset at 17:14 catches a lot of travelers off guard. Plan dinner reservations accordingly.

Winter sunsets (November to February)

Winter visitors get a totally different Santorini, quiet, dramatic skies, sunsets at 17:00. You can be at the caldera by 16:30, watch the show, and be inside a warm taverna by 17:30. We rate winter sunsets among the most beautiful of the year. Cloud cover means more color reflections, and there is no crowd.

  • November to January: sunset between 17:00 and 17:15
  • February: 17:44 to 18:13

Trade-off: most caldera-edge restaurants close in winter, ferries run less often, and the rooftop deck where we serve sunset drinks in summer is closed. The view from inside a cave suite makes up for it.

Practical sunset rules

  1. Always check tomorrow's exact time. Sunset moves by 1 to 2 minutes per day. A guide that says "8:30 PM" is rounding. Use timeanddate.com or weather.com the morning of.
  2. Watch the weather, not just the time. A clear day with high thin cloud beats a totally cloudless day for color. Solid cloud cover at the horizon kills the show.
  3. Arrive earlier than you think. Oia in summer needs 90 minutes of lead time for a good spot. Pyrgos needs 30. Your hotel rooftop needs 0.
  4. Bring a layer. Even in August, the wind picks up in the last 30 minutes before sunset. Caldera-edge spots get cool fast after the sun drops.
  5. Stay for blue hour. The 30 minutes after sunset, when the sky turns deep blue and the village lights flicker on, is often the most photogenic stretch.

Frequently asked questions

What time is sunset in Santorini in June?

In June 2026, Santorini sunset times range from 20:32 at the start of the month to 20:40 around the summer solstice on June 21. The latest sunset of the year is around 20:40 on June 21 to June 28.

What time is sunset in Santorini in October?

October sunset times in Santorini range from 19:00 on October 1 down to 18:14 on October 31, just before Daylight Saving Time ends. After the clocks change on the last Sunday of October, sunset drops to about 17:14.

What time is sunset in Oia, Santorini?

Sunset times in Oia are the same as anywhere else in Santorini (within a minute). The reason Oia feels special is the view of the caldera and the western horizon, not a different solar clock. Arrive at Oia Castle by 60 to 90 minutes before sunset in summer to get a viewing spot.

What is golden hour in Santorini?

Golden hour in Santorini is the 60 minutes before sunset, when light turns warm and soft. In June, that means 19:30 to 20:30. In October, 17:40 to 18:40. For photography, the last 30 minutes of golden hour are best.

Is sunset earlier in Oia than in Fira?

No. Oia and Fira are only 11 km apart, on the same caldera rim. Sunset times are identical (within seconds). Oia faces more directly west, so the sun drops behind the headland in the most photogenic way, but the time is the same.

Does Santorini have Daylight Saving Time?

Yes. Greece switches to summer time (EEST, GMT+3) on the last Sunday of March, and back to standard time (EET, GMT+2) on the last Sunday of October. Sunset jumps roughly 1 hour earlier on the October change date.

How long should I stay for the sunset?

Plan for the full 60 minutes before sunset (golden hour) plus 25 to 30 minutes after (afterglow and start of blue hour). The 30-minute window after the sun drops is often the most colorful and least crowded.
