Beaches
Last updated: March 2026
Perissa, Kamari, Red Beach, they pull in thousands every summer. Fine beaches. Worth seeing. But romantic? Not really. If you want santorini beaches for couples that actually feel like yours, raw, private, no crowd, you need to go where the tour buses don't.
Perissa, Kamari, Red Beach, they pull in thousands every summer. Fine beaches. Worth seeing. But romantic? Not really. Not when you're lying elbow-to-elbow with a family of six and someone's Bluetooth speaker is playing reggaeton at full volume.
If you want santorini beaches for couples that actually feel like yours, raw, private, no crowd, you need to go where the tour buses don't. That's what this guide is for.

We've watched couples stumble onto these beaches for years. They come back sunburned and raving. Some of these spots have no sunbeds. A few have no road. All of them give you something the popular beaches can't: space, quiet, and the kind of view that makes you forget your phone exists.
Planning a romantic trip to Santorini or a honeymoon? Put these on the list. Seven beaches where you can actually hear the waves.
Vlychada sits on the southern coast, about 12 km from Fira. And those cliffs. That's what hits you first. Decades of wind and volcanic erosion have carved the white-grey rock into shapes that look like they belong on Mars. Most dramatic backdrop on the island, no contest.
Why couples love it: There's an organized section near the small port, sunbeds, a beach bar, the basics. But walk 5 to 10 minutes east and suddenly you're on empty black sand with nobody in sight. That contrast is the whole point. Cold drink or total solitude. Your call.
The honest details:
Sunset note: Vlychada faces south, not west. No sun dropping into the sea here. But between 5 and 7 PM the light goes golden on those sculpted walls, and honestly, it's a different kind of beautiful.
Colombo (some maps say Koloumbo) is the beach you hike to on purpose. No road to the sand. You park up on the hill above Cape Colombo, then walk down a steep path for 15 to 20 minutes. That hike is exactly why this beach stays empty.
Why couples love it: You might be completely alone here. That's not an exaggeration. Colombo is also Santorini's most well-known clothing-optional beach. Whether that's your thing or not, the result is the same, a beach that draws people who care about privacy more than comfort.
The honest details:
Who it's not for: If you want a cocktail and a padded lounger, this isn't your beach. Colombo is for the couple who'd rather earn their view than pay for it.
Everyone goes to Oia for sunset. Almost nobody goes to the beach below it.
Baxedes, sometimes listed as Paradisos, sits on the north coast, about 10 minutes by car from Oia village. It's long, uncrowded, and feels nothing like the south coast beaches.
Why couples love it: Even on a busy July day, you can find a spot where nobody's within shouting distance. The sand is a mix of dark pebbles and coarse volcanic grains. There's a small taverna nearby. And the water? Cleaner than almost anywhere else on the island.
The honest details:
Best for: Late May. Early June. September. Before and after the crowds. That's when Baxedes is at its best, one of those quiet beaches Santorini hides along its northern coastline.
This is the hardest one on the list to find. That's the whole point.
Mesa Pigadia is tucked into a narrow cove on the south coast, between Akrotiri and the lighthouse. You reach it via a dirt path. There's no sign anywhere pointing you toward it.
Why couples love it: Seclusion. Real seclusion. Most days you'll share this cove with one or two other people. Maybe nobody. The cove is sheltered from wind, the water is clear, and the volcanic rock walls on both sides close in around you like a room.
The honest details:
Pro tip: Pair Mesa Pigadia with the Akrotiri Lighthouse, one of Santorini's best sunset spots. Swim in the afternoon. Catch sunset from the lighthouse. Dinner in Akrotiri village. That's a complete romantic evening built around a beach almost nobody has heard of.
Most people stare at the caldera from above. Restaurants, terraces, hotel balconies. But you can actually get down to the water on the caldera side. Few people realize that.
Caldera Beach sits below the cliffside path between Fira and Firostefani. You access it via stone steps carved into the rock.
Why couples love it: You're swimming in the caldera. The volcano sits right across the water. The cliff face rises behind you. It's a completely different angle on Santorini's most famous view, and because the access is tricky and unmarked, it stays quiet.
The honest details:
From Aroma Suites: This is the closest beach on the list to our suites in Fira. You can reach the caldera cliff path on foot in minutes. Swim, climb back up, and you're a short walk from restaurants, cafes, and the comfort of your jacuzzi suite or honeymoon suite.
White Beach is right next to the more famous Red Beach near Akrotiri. But you can't walk between them anymore, the cliff path has been closed for safety. Only way in is by boat. And that built-in barrier does the work for you. Crowds stay small.
Why couples love it: White pumice cliffs dropping straight into turquoise water. In photos it looks fake. The beach is small, sheltered, and the snorkeling is excellent.
The honest details:
Pair it with: The Akrotiri archaeological site, a 10-minute drive from the port. It's called the "Pompeii of the Aegean", a Bronze Age city sealed under volcanic ash since 1600 BC.
This one catches visitors off guard, and it belongs on any list of Santorini hidden gems. Exo Gialos is the old port area below Fira, and there's a small pebble beach that locals use for a morning dip. It's not a "beach day" spot in the usual sense. But for couples staying in Fira? It's a quiet pleasure most tourists walk right past.
Why couples love it: There's a little taverna right on the water. Grilled fish. Cold beer. Swim, eat, swim again. It feels like a Greek island secret, not a tourist attraction. The walk down from Fira takes about 20 minutes on a donkey path, or you can drive.
The honest details:

| Colombo | 20-min hike | None | Near-empty | Dark sand + pebbles | No | Adventure, total seclusion |
| Baxedes | Easy (car) | Minimal | Low | Dark pebbles | No (north-facing) | Calm days near Oia |

Morning (9:00-12:00): Start at Vlychada or White Beach. The light is best early, and you'll beat the small trickle of visitors who do eventually show up.
Lunch (12:30-14:00): Drive to one of the south coast tavernas. Near Vlychada? The fish restaurants at the marina are casual, affordable, and real, EUR 25-40 for two with wine. Came from White Beach? Head to Akrotiri village instead.
Afternoon rest (14:00-17:00): This is Santorini in summer. It's hot. Go back to your room. Use the private jacuzzi. Save your energy. The evening is worth saving it for.
Late afternoon (17:00-18:30): Drive to Baxedes for a late swim while it's still warm. Or take the cliff path down to Caldera Beach for something completely different.
Sunset + dinner (18:30-21:00): Watch sunset from one of the island's best viewpoints. Walk to a restaurant in Fira. A glass of Assyrtiko from a local winery with whatever the kitchen recommends. That's a good night.
Timing matters here more than you'd think. Santorini's beach season runs May to October, but each month has its own personality.
May and early June: The best window for quiet beaches. Water is 20-22C, warm enough to swim, cool enough to keep crowds thin. Baxedes and Vlychada feel almost private. Mesa Pigadia will be deserted.
July and August: Peak everything. Even the "quiet" beaches see more faces. Vlychada's organized section fills by noon. Colombo stays empty, nobody wants that hike in 35-degree heat. Strategy: arrive before 10 AM at any beach. Or go after 5 PM once the day-trippers head back.
September and October: This is the couples' sweet spot. Water is warmest it'll be all year, 24-25C from absorbing summer heat all season. Crowds drop hard after mid-September. Prices soften for accommodation. Late September at Vlychada, warm water, golden light, almost nobody around, is genuinely one of Santorini's best-kept pleasures.
A few things that separate a decent day from a great one:
The quieter beaches are scattered around the island, but Fira sits in the middle of everything. You can reach any beach on this list in 15 to 25 minutes by car.
Our Fira properties are walking distance from restaurants, shops, and the caldera cliff path. Spend the day on one of these empty beaches, then come back to your own private terrace with the caldera spread out below you.
Looking for modern luxury closer to Fira's nightlife? Uma Ray Suites is a newer property from the same family. Want a private villa with space to breathe? Casa di Terra Villa sits on the quieter side of the island.
Check availability and book direct for the best rate and complimentary perks.
Colombo Beach and Mesa Pigadia are the most secluded options. Colombo requires a 20-minute hike, and Mesa Pigadia has no signage or facilities. Both reward the effort with near-total privacy most days.
Caldera Beach offers the best sunset angle because you're facing west across the caldera. Most of the south coast beaches (Vlychada, Colombo, Mesa Pigadia) face south and don't get direct sunset views, though the late afternoon light is still beautiful.
Yes. Vlychada is probably the best balance of comfort and seclusion. The organized section near the marina has sunbeds and a bar, but walking east along the shore gets you to completely empty stretches. The sculpted cliff backdrop makes it one of the most photogenic beaches in Santorini.
Yes. Caldera Beach below Fira has swimming access, though the water is deeper and colder than the south coast. Water shoes are recommended because the entry is rocky. The setting, swimming with the volcano across the water and the cliffs rising behind you, is unlike anything else on the island.
Water, snacks, towels, sunscreen, water shoes, and shade (a small umbrella or beach tent). Beaches like Colombo, Mesa Pigadia, and Caldera Beach have zero facilities. There's nowhere to buy food or rent equipment once you're there.
It depends on the beach. Vlychada and Baxedes have volcanic sand (dark grey or black). Colombo has a mix of sand and pebbles. Caldera Beach, White Beach, and Exo Gialos are mostly pebble and rock. None of Santorini's beaches have the fine white sand you'll find in the Cyclades islands like Naxos or Milos, and that's part of their character.
White Beach is only accessible by water taxi from Red Beach or the Akrotiri port area. Most boats now run as a hop-on, hop-off day service, around EUR 15 per person for unlimited rides covering Red, White, and Black beaches, with the last boat back usually around 6 PM. The cliff path that once connected Red Beach to White Beach has been closed for safety. Arrive before 10 AM for the best experience.
